Architectural Notes on Church Renovation (con’t)
Sacred Heart of Jesus Chapel
Addition of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Chapel was a challenge to construct in order to be in harmony with the existing Romanesque Church. Since there was no room to add it to either side, it had to be placed on the same axis as the Church and at the rear of the Sanctuary. This has been accomplished by using the same scale and similar materials, and by repeating the arches over the side windows in an entrance arch. All masonry work was detailed to match the existing brick and cast stone but matching brick was not obtainable.
The Chapel interior suggests a different look from the rest of the Mission-style architecture. Simple surfaces of rich materials were chosen because there are no longer craftsmen who can construct details that would match the existing work in the rest of the Church. The use of white textured stucco on the walls, complimented by the natural ceiling, helps obtain the visual quality needed. The stained glass windows* and the colorful multi-colored cross located in the end wall add the color as a compliment to the area.
The result is a very pleasant and spiritual place that adds greatly to the Church. Two reconciliation rooms have been added in the chapel wing of the addition. To improve the quality of these areas, windows with sand blasted glass were introduced to provide visually more pleasant spaces.
Note by compiler: The statues of Mary and Joseph with the Child Jesus that had been in the main church since 1931 were moved to the chapel. Their sizes are more compatible with the smaller space. Originally on the tabernacles of the two side altars, the statues were replaced with taller ones since the tabernacles were removed during renovation. The tabernacle in the chapel is from the first St. Philip church. It stands on the baptismal font that had been used prior to the building of the new font. The older font was turned upside down in order to provide a base to hold the tabernacle.
Stations of the Cross were added in February, 2005. They were a gift to Father Gary Janak, Pastor.
*The four evangelists: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John The designs are based on the four winged creatures from Ezekiel 1:5-21, 10:20 and Revelation 4:6-8.
